Why is it necessary to test the leaves, when you already know what is in the soil? That's a good question. . . The reason is that the nutrients in the soil may not be making it into the plant tissues. Perhaps this is due to a pathological problem, or perhaps the nutrients are simply not available in a form that the plant can use. To put that in a human perspective, coffee has many forms (decaf, caffeinated, with sugar or without, with cream and sugar, etc.). Some people don't tolerate coffee at all, while others can only drink it in a special form. In the same way, the same basic nutrient, Nitrogen, for example, may be plentiful in the soil, but of no use to the plant.
